After holding off the Cardinals last Thursday, the Seahawks have a mini-bye before hosting the Falcons on Monday.

“We got some nice 2-point conversions,” said Wentz, who was 14 of 27 for 168 yards. “Now we’ve got to go back to the drawing board with our 2-point plays.”

The Cowboys appeared to have fixed the problems of missing injured left tackle Tyron Smith and 2016 All-Pro linebacker Sean Lee from a week earlier, when they allowed eight sacks of Prescott along with three Atlanta scoring drives following Lee’s injury in a 27-7 loss to the Falcons.

But after protecting Prescott fairly well before halftime, Dallas allowed three sacks and 180 of Philadelphia’s season-high 215 yards rushing in the second half. Lee’s replacement at weakside linebacker, Anthony Hitchens, left with a groin injury after halftime.

Prescott was 18 of 31 for 145 yards for a career-worst 30.4 passer rating before backup Cooper Rush took mop-up duty.

If Del Rio actually calls up (or signs) an actual cornerback this week and plays Melifonwu at safety for the majority of his snaps on Sunday, the rookie will get a chance to show his closing speed and athletic ability against the Broncos… in the high altitude of Denver’s Mile High Stadium.

Hammered by the Steelers last Thursday in one of their worst games of the season, the Titans have had a couple extra days to stew while getting ready for Sunday’s game in Indianapolis.

The Ravens have three shutouts this season and three of the previous four teams to accomplish the feat during that span won the Super Bowl in that season.

The 2017 Chiefs are looking like the 2016 Vikings, who started 5-0 only to miss the playoffs. Kansas City looks to snap its skid Sunday against the Bills.nike_steelers_715

Carson Wentz and Zach Ertz need to be moving up the ratings as well.

When coaches and scouts find a quarterback who can “make all the throws” and possesses the physical traits often associated with NFL success, the player’s college career plays out on a two-track path with attention paid to both how he’s developing and his impact on the team.

Out in Los Angeles, there are three quarterbacks under the age of 25 with expectations of professional success. With reports circulating that Sam Darnold is planning to spend another year at USC, expect the NFL Draft spotlight to zero in on Josh Rosen at UCLA and in particular the similarities and differences to former Cal and current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff.

Both times, Stiegelmeier took the call, but he’d never even heard of the kid. In fact, in his 30 years at SDSU as both an assistant and head coach, he’d never even had a player from Britton on the team. Between the football and track seasons, Stiegelmeier took the trip to Britton to watch Goedert play a basketball game, and came away with mixed feelings.

Landry has a tough matchup against Baltimore’s stingy pass defense that’s only allowed three touchdowns to receivers this season, so you can use that as a negotiation metric. Or if Landry ends up struggling on Thursday night, buy low on him after the game. Either way, keep Landry on your trade-for radar with an eye on those juicy fantasy playoff matchups.

Carson Wentz Jersey and Zach Ertz also need to be moving up the ratings as well. Wentz showed his great ability to escape pressure and then emerge on the other end, like a bunny who had been flushed from the bushes to gain a first down. Wentz also showed a pretty strong arm as well, going deep on a number of occasions against a decent Redskins defense.

Andy Dalton hits A.J. Green for two scores in a blowout.

If there’s good news for Rosen and UCLA moving forward, it’s that last week’s win against Oregon was the first game since beating Hawaii on Sept. 9 where he didn’t throw an interception. Limiting those mistakes, especially in the red zone, are going to a huge part of making sure the Bruins stay on track to make a bowl game in 2017.

Rosen, like Goff, hasn’t been mentioned for any kind of college accolades despite being one of the best quarterbacks in the country. All-America honors and Heisman Trophy consideration always seems to follow the teams at the top of college football when it comes to the quarterback position. No player since 1969 (Oklahoma’s Steve Owens) has won the Heisman Trophy while playing for a team with four losses, and winners of the award on a team with two or three losses during the regular season usually have at least one signature win against a top team during their campaign.
And that signature win is where Rosen can separate himself from Goff in terms of their college careers.

Rosen’s final five regular season games present an opportunity to thrive in the spotlight, providing on-field evidence for a national audience in his ability to play quarterback at the highest level. Goff’s 0-13 record against ranked teams had no direct effect on his development into a successful NFL quarterback, but it kept him from having a lasting impact on the college game.

“Dallas is more explosive, physically faster than Steve was, has more wiggle in him. Steve was closer to a tackle, a traditional tight end,” Stiegelmeier says. “Steve got drafted in the third round (No. 69 overall in 1999). I’m not predicting where Dallas will be picked, but I think he’s further ahead now than Steve was at the time.”

The Colts are awful. They couldn’t score last week at home against Jacksonville, and this Bengals defense is tied for fourth in points allowed. The Bengals will bounce back after losing to the Steelers. Andy Dalton Jersey hits A.J. Green Jersey for two scores in a blowout.

Here are three takeaways from Seattle’s win on Thursday Night Football

The Penguins played without star center Evgeni Malkin, who sustained an upper-body injury during a home loss against Chicago on Saturday. Malkin, second on the team with seven goals and 21 points, practiced on Monday, but did not skate on Tuesday. Malkin will be re-evaluated Thursday before it’s determined if he can play at Boston on Friday or Tampa Bay Saturday at home.

Derek Dorsett didn’t play for the Canucks. He was sent to Vancouver for precautionary medical reasons stemming from neck and back stiffness. Dorsett missed 68 games last season after undergoing career-threatening cervical fusion neck surgery in December 2016. He has nine points in 20 games this season, along with 39 hits and a league-high 74 penalty minutes.

The Seahawks pride themselves on a physical defense that jams opposing receivers immediately off the line of scrimmage, but their discipline problems are alarming. The Seahawks have now committed double-digit penalties in four straight games, which won’t cut it against elite opponents.

Seahawks defense regaining bite — For the second straight week, the Seahawks defense forced a safety. This time, they stuffed Adrian Peterson into his own end zone after backing the Cardinals up against their own goal line.

The Rays are in a similar boat to Pittsburgh’s. The status quo odds are long, but playoff contention is within the realm of possibility. One way or another, some upside needs to be introduced to the big-league roster.nike_patriots_561

Tyreek Hill Jersey has been sensational.

Everyone saw the impact he had as a rookie in 2016, when he scored 12 total touchdowns (including rushing, receiving and return scores), but there was some question as to whether the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Hill could step in and be a big-play No. 1 receiver. Well, Hill has been just what the Chiefs needed him to be. He and stud tight end Travis Kelce are tied for the team lead in targets with 49, and Hill has a team-high 515 receiving yards (14.3 per catch) and three touchdowns. Kelce, meanwhile, ranks third in catch percentage (75.5) among players with 45-plus targets this season, while Hill ranks fifth (73.5 percent) — the Chiefs are the only team with two players ranked in the top 10 of that category, according to Pro Football Reference. The Chiefs are also just one of two teams with two players ranked in the top 15 in receiving yards (Hill is fifth and Kelce is 15th with 423; the other team is the Patriots, courtesy of third-ranked Brandin Cooks and 13th-ranked Rob Gronkowski Jersey).

Listen, I don’t try to live my life as a contrarian. That’s not true — I kind of do. I spend a lot of time in public houses and taverns, and I have a two-hour commute that allows me to hear a lot of the sports world’s most popular opinions. Sometimes, I think it’s best to take a look at the other side.

In this space, I’ll be articulating a handful of positions that are the opposite of what most people think — unpopular opinions, if you will — and explain why, well, my unpopular opinions are right and everyone else is wrong. Below are my unpopular opinions for Week 8.

The San Francisco 49ers are not a good football team (0-7) that plays in a new stadium (in a city that isn’t San Francisco) that fans do not seem to enjoy. So, it’s really not that surprising then to learn that they reached out to fans with a questionnaire to get some feedback. What is surprising is that they thought asking fans, “In terms of game day experience, how important is it that your team wins?” was a good idea.

NFL scores: Week 10 results, highlights

Nobody before the season could have guessed Saints vs. Bills in Week 10 would be so intriguing. The game in Buffalo was the marquee matchup of Sunday’s early games … until New Orleans turned it into a blowout. The Saints dominated the Bills, 47-10, and extended their surprising lead in the NFC South.

“I don’t regret my decision. I regret the result,” McDermott told reporters following the game. “This is in part about winning now and in part about winning in the future.

Are the LA Clippers’ hopes of extending their playoff streak to seven consecutive years already dashed? Kevin Pelton projects their chances and breaks down potential moves if they need to rebuild.
“It’s a tough blow for the team, but it’s worse for Patrick,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers told reporters in Atlanta before his team went out and beat the Hawks 116-101. “We thought it would probably be just meniscus, but it turns out to be a lot more.”

Not only have Kaepernick and Goodell not met one-on-one, but they can’t even agree on the details of the invitation to do so.

Kaepernick’s attorney, Mark Geragos, says league spokesman Joe Lockhart’s claim that an invitation Oct. 31 from NFL VP Troy Vincent went unanswered was false, and that Geragos countered the invitation Nov. 1 with an offer to meet with Goodell if a mediator was present. The attorney said the NFL rebuffed a meeting that included a mediator.

Lockhart, however, called Geragos’ claim “disingenuous.”

“Troy reached out to Colin directly — not to his lawyer — and said, ‘If you want to come in, come in,'” Lockhart told Yahoo Sports. “This isn’t about his lawyer. This isn’t about a mediator. The question of, ‘Has (Colin) been invited in?’ — the answer is yes.”broncos_091-500x500

Mark Emmert says public losing confidence in NCAA

The American public is losing confidence in the governance of collegiate athletics, NCAA president Mark Emmert said Monday, creating a significant problem for his organization.

Emmert cited data collected by the NCAA showing that 79 percent of people polled said big schools put money ahead of student-athletes, 69 percent considered those universities more of a problem than the solution, and 51 percent said the NCAA is part of the problem.

“The NCAA members, my staff and those schools have got to get our arms around it fast,” Emmert said. “I don’t think this is some little blip that’s going to go away over time. This is a real question of whether or not the universities and colleges, through the association, can manage their affairs.

“And I don’t think anybody should take it lightly. I’m sure not.”

Beernerdness: While I limp to the finish line of Sober October (29 days down, two to go, and it hasn’t been too bad, thanks to my wife/partner in temperance), I thank all of you for helping fill the column with your beer choices. It’s Nathan Gross of Raleigh, N.C., today: “I am lucky with the sheer number of great breweries in my backyard, but one that has stood out to me is an new-ish brewery in Charlotte, Blue Blaze Brewing.

The beer is really amazing. I’m a hop-head, but Blue Blaze’s Black Blaze Milk Stout really has me hooked. It’s got a coffee-like taste to it that isn’t off-putting and gives it enough depth to make it really interesting, whether you like coffee or even stouts at all. It’s not overly heavy and you can drink more than one in a sitting, which you can’t say about most stouts.” Excellent job, Nathan. Thanks.

Alex Bregman, you can play third base for my team any day. What a defender.flames_112

Lehtonen used to have some of the most innovative pop-culture masks in hockey

Since he won in the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 18 car at Kansas, that team will run for the owners championship — likely with Ryan Preece behind the wheel. Bell will be in the JGR No. 20, which also hopes to be among the final four in contention for the owners title.

Bell is used to running in multiple divisions on a weekend, as he has often done it at USAC and other sprint-car events.

There’s really nothing scarier than seeing a mild-mannered, completely average goalie suddenly being devoured by a ghost dinosaur.

Lehtonen used to have some of the most innovative pop-culture masks in hockey, including a beauty that featured The Bride from “Kill Bill” and Lil Jon. This one, which centers around Heath Ledger’s Joker, is his most frightening — in particular when Lehtonen would ask if you’d like to see his disappearing-goalie-stick trick.

But Steve Kerr chose to get cute, and left Javale McGee on the bench even while his team was bleeding points. There was no reason for McGee to play the same number of minutes as Thicc Klay Thompson. Mike Brown would have had JaVale in the game at the very least for offense-defense switches down the stretch. Instead, Ryan Anderson was allowed to roam free to the tune of three offensive rebounds.

It was shocking that McGee didn’t play in the wake of injuries to Green and Andre Iguodala. The Warriors were exposed as a thin team on Tuesday. When Golden State is reduced to playing with only three Hall-of-Famers at a time, the Dubs absolutely crumble under the pressure.

Bottom line: When the game is hanging in the balance, you want a champion on the court. McGee should have been out there.

Bower said he used to be a scratch golfer, and he has won several tournaments and a club championship. He said he has adapted to the committee’s system relativcanadiens_757_597548fd896a91fe-180x180ely easily, “although it took time to get used to the process.” This year, Bower said he is “fine-tuning my routine and applying an extensive amount of data to make sure we make the best decision.”

Can they actually make the Stanley Cup playoffs?

Sources said the league looked into the matter and learned that Olshey’s hand gesture was directed at a close friend, who is a fan of the Clippers, which is why no punishment was issued.

As for the scuffle with Beal, Green said he’s still not over how everything went down.

“I’m still watching that video over again, trying to figure out what I did wrong,” he said.

According to the Elias Sport Bureau, the Golden Knights are the only franchise in NHL history to have three goalies with at least two wins through the first eight team games of a season.

Over the past four seasons, the eighth-place team in the Western Conference has averaged 92 points. Vegas already has 16 points in nine games. To earn 92 points, the Golden Knights would need 76 in their final 73 games (.521 points percentage).

Curry and Golden State got handed a second home defeat at this early stage of the season, falling 115-107 to the Pistons on Sunday night as Avery Bradley scored 23 points for Detroit.

“It just has to matter enough. Right now it just doesn’t seem to matter. Our guys are lacking in energy and focus and discipline,” Kerr said. “We finally started caring with six minutes left when we were threatened and we immediately cut it to three because we cared. But the right team won, karma was in the right place tonight.”

Tobias Harris hit a 3-pointer with 1:27 remaining that all but sealed it after Kevin Durant fueled a late Warriors rally.

Smith has been the athletic director at Ohio State since 2005, having previously served in the same capacity at Arizona State and Iowa State. He has served on the NCAA committee on infractions, NCAA executive committee, NCAA football rules committee and NCAA men’s basketball selection committee. He was a member of Notre Dame’s 1973 AP national championship team.canadiens_398_6f5baf9f451fa5c1-180x180

Texans vs. Seahawks, recapped in a 2-minute read

What happened: The Seahawks beat the Texans 41-38 in one of the most entertaining games of the season.

How it happened: It was a tight game, and it was fun as hell from start to finish. The fourth quarter was particularly thrilling. The Texans managed to score on the Seahawks defense not once, but twice, with Watson touchdowns to Lamar Miller and DeAndre Hopkins.

Anything else? Most Texans players protested during the national anthem. It came as a response to Texans owner Bob McNair, who made controversial comments about player protests on Friday.

The Seahawks challenged a third down Russell Wilson pass that was ruled incomplete because they wanted it to be a fumble instead. It was recovered by Luke Willson and gave the Seahawks a first down.

Garcon had just two catches for 17 yards before leaving Sunday’s game in the third quarter with a neck injury. He has a team-best 40 receptions for 500 yards and led the NFL in receptions in 2013, when he caught 113 passes for 1,346 yards while with the Redskins. His neck injury is not expected to keep him out of next Sunday’s game against the Cardinals, who are 3-4 and without starting quarterback Carson Palmer. The 49ers then play host to the offensively inept Giants, who are just 1-6, before entering their bye week.

With a rookie quarterback in C.J. Beathard and injuries piling up on both sides of the ball, first-year 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says his team has “to be strong-minded.”

“I think guys did take a step forward from last week with a few things, especially on defense. We really have to take care of our bodies and get the team healthy, not just on Sundays but throughout the week. We have to find a way to get some of these guys back. It’s going to be that way all year. We have to find a way to get better. There’s no secret message I can say about it. The guys who get better will help us, and if you don’t, we’re going to get worse.”blues-017
