We want to have a high bar set for screening.

As of the middle of November, the NFL said it had conducted 379 concussion evaluations (including preseason games). The NFL and the NFL Players Association are reviewing the Savage case; the two have a policy in place to jointly investigate these cases and determine if there was a violation. If warranted, discipline can be handed down.

“Those are just the amount of times that people were screened,” Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL’s Chief Medical Office, said in a briefing Nov. 14. “And to be clear, we want that number to remain high. Our motto to all of our personnel on game day is if you see something, say something. We want anyone who has a concern to point it out, we want to be very aggressive in our screening.”

The Falcons witnessed it to excruciating effect a year ago — another comeback, that time in Super Bowl LI, executed without Gronkowski. It was the Jaguars’ turn this time, after holding an 11-point lead in the second quarter and a 10-point lead as the fourth quarter began. That the penalties were lopsided — just one for the Patriots and six for the Jaguars — or that the Jaguars seemed to lose confidence in Blake Bortles late are part of the conversation in the immediate aftermath of this game, but the common thread of all these years has been Brady covering up for a multitude of Patriots misfortunes.

But, in truth, what Kelly has done in the NFL has been more nuanced and complex. Clearly, you don’t want him in charge of your roster. You don’t want him as your head coach, at least not at this point.

Yet there has been some evidence, which is easy to overlook now, that his offense can work at this level, if he’s given the right players.

It will be interesting to see if Kelly ever is given another NFL chance as an offensive coordinator, if that is indeed what he wants, and what will happen if that ever comes about.

He tiptoed up the sideline then cut across the field, leaving Patriots defenders in his wake, forcing everyone to consider that the Steelers’ inability to contain Rob Gronkowski, who had galloped for consecutive 26-yard receptions on the go-ahead touchdown drive, would wind up being irrelevant. Then came James’ seeming touchdown and Roethlisberger said the team was “extremely ecstatic.” Then, the play was overturned, and the Steelers had to reel their emotions in one last time, to try to figure out what to do.cowboys_060

Packers reportedly gave Mike McCarthy 1-year extension during season

Mike McCarthy has secured another season Green Bay.

The Packers coach received a one-year contract extension during the regular season and will remain with the team through 2019, ESPN reported, citing unidentified sources.

The deal with McCarthy, who would have been entering the final year of his contract in 2018 without an extension, was never formally announced.

The wild-card round begins Saturday as the Rams, who haven’t seen postseason action since 2004, will host the Falcons in the late game (8:15 p.m. ET). The Chiefs host the Titans at 4:30 p.m. ET in Saturday’s first game.

Most teams would trade their entire existence in the NFL for the Ravens’ last five seasons, since their Super Bowl 47 win. One playoff trip that featured a narrow loss at New England, just one losing season, three seasons contending for the postseason that ended with heartbreaking, last-minute defeat to division rivals.

Painful, but still better than all but an elite handful, and a universe away from their Super Bowl opponent in 2013, the 49ers, who have fired coaches three times, their general manager once and changed quarterbacks five times. By contrast, coach John Harbaugh, general manager Ozzie Newsome and quarterback Joe Flacco have been united in Baltimore for 10 years now.

Still, there’s that 40-40 post-Super Bowl record, and the four years missing the playoffs.

Gurley: “Not really. We’ve had some pretty tough ones.

Atkinson admittedly doesn’t truly qualify for this space, as he is rostered in more than two-thirds of ESPN leagues, but we’re making an exception, pointing to a potential end to the winger’s dry spell.

The Bills did what they were supposed to do against the Colts, even if snow and Nathan Peterman and Joe Webb made the home assignment a lot harder than it was supposed to be. Buffalo still holds a tenuous lead on that wild-card berth.

The Chiefs finally got off the mat at home and fed Kareem Hunt like it was September as they pulled away in a near must-win for a key split with the Raiders. They can’t relax with the better Chargers coming to their house on Saturday.

This is a game everybody’s been anticipating. You’ve got (2016 draft picks) No. 1 vs. No. 2 in (Jared) Goff and Carson (Wentz). That’s all they’ve been talking about, so it’ll be a good game. You get excited for games like this.

“You’ve got to beat the best to be the best and that’s what both teams are going out there to try to do.”

Q: If you’d been told last year when they were drafted that a year later Goff and Wentz would be leading their divisions late in the season, what would have been your reaction?

Gurley: “Um, I don’t think anybody would have believed that. Obviously, Philly started off (hot), and then things didn’t go as planned and obviously things didn’t go as planned for us. Just to see the turnaround for both organizations, it started with the quarterback play. Goff’s been a great leader; been able to go out there and execute. Wentz has been playing lights out as well on the opposite site.

Carson Wentz and Zach Ertz need to be moving up the ratings as well.

When coaches and scouts find a quarterback who can “make all the throws” and possesses the physical traits often associated with NFL success, the player’s college career plays out on a two-track path with attention paid to both how he’s developing and his impact on the team.

Out in Los Angeles, there are three quarterbacks under the age of 25 with expectations of professional success. With reports circulating that Sam Darnold is planning to spend another year at USC, expect the NFL Draft spotlight to zero in on Josh Rosen at UCLA and in particular the similarities and differences to former Cal and current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff.

Both times, Stiegelmeier took the call, but he’d never even heard of the kid. In fact, in his 30 years at SDSU as both an assistant and head coach, he’d never even had a player from Britton on the team. Between the football and track seasons, Stiegelmeier took the trip to Britton to watch Goedert play a basketball game, and came away with mixed feelings.

Landry has a tough matchup against Baltimore’s stingy pass defense that’s only allowed three touchdowns to receivers this season, so you can use that as a negotiation metric. Or if Landry ends up struggling on Thursday night, buy low on him after the game. Either way, keep Landry on your trade-for radar with an eye on those juicy fantasy playoff matchups.

Carson Wentz Jersey and Zach Ertz also need to be moving up the ratings as well. Wentz showed his great ability to escape pressure and then emerge on the other end, like a bunny who had been flushed from the bushes to gain a first down. Wentz also showed a pretty strong arm as well, going deep on a number of occasions against a decent Redskins defense.

Andy Dalton hits A.J. Green for two scores in a blowout.

If there’s good news for Rosen and UCLA moving forward, it’s that last week’s win against Oregon was the first game since beating Hawaii on Sept. 9 where he didn’t throw an interception. Limiting those mistakes, especially in the red zone, are going to a huge part of making sure the Bruins stay on track to make a bowl game in 2017.

Rosen, like Goff, hasn’t been mentioned for any kind of college accolades despite being one of the best quarterbacks in the country. All-America honors and Heisman Trophy consideration always seems to follow the teams at the top of college football when it comes to the quarterback position. No player since 1969 (Oklahoma’s Steve Owens) has won the Heisman Trophy while playing for a team with four losses, and winners of the award on a team with two or three losses during the regular season usually have at least one signature win against a top team during their campaign.
And that signature win is where Rosen can separate himself from Goff in terms of their college careers.

Rosen’s final five regular season games present an opportunity to thrive in the spotlight, providing on-field evidence for a national audience in his ability to play quarterback at the highest level. Goff’s 0-13 record against ranked teams had no direct effect on his development into a successful NFL quarterback, but it kept him from having a lasting impact on the college game.

“Dallas is more explosive, physically faster than Steve was, has more wiggle in him. Steve was closer to a tackle, a traditional tight end,” Stiegelmeier says. “Steve got drafted in the third round (No. 69 overall in 1999). I’m not predicting where Dallas will be picked, but I think he’s further ahead now than Steve was at the time.”

The Colts are awful. They couldn’t score last week at home against Jacksonville, and this Bengals defense is tied for fourth in points allowed. The Bengals will bounce back after losing to the Steelers. Andy Dalton Jersey hits A.J. Green Jersey for two scores in a blowout.

Here are three takeaways from Seattle’s win on Thursday Night Football

The Penguins played without star center Evgeni Malkin, who sustained an upper-body injury during a home loss against Chicago on Saturday. Malkin, second on the team with seven goals and 21 points, practiced on Monday, but did not skate on Tuesday. Malkin will be re-evaluated Thursday before it’s determined if he can play at Boston on Friday or Tampa Bay Saturday at home.

Derek Dorsett didn’t play for the Canucks. He was sent to Vancouver for precautionary medical reasons stemming from neck and back stiffness. Dorsett missed 68 games last season after undergoing career-threatening cervical fusion neck surgery in December 2016. He has nine points in 20 games this season, along with 39 hits and a league-high 74 penalty minutes.

The Seahawks pride themselves on a physical defense that jams opposing receivers immediately off the line of scrimmage, but their discipline problems are alarming. The Seahawks have now committed double-digit penalties in four straight games, which won’t cut it against elite opponents.

Seahawks defense regaining bite — For the second straight week, the Seahawks defense forced a safety. This time, they stuffed Adrian Peterson into his own end zone after backing the Cardinals up against their own goal line.

The Rays are in a similar boat to Pittsburgh’s. The status quo odds are long, but playoff contention is within the realm of possibility. One way or another, some upside needs to be introduced to the big-league roster.nike_patriots_561

Texans vs. Seahawks, recapped in a 2-minute read

What happened: The Seahawks beat the Texans 41-38 in one of the most entertaining games of the season.

How it happened: It was a tight game, and it was fun as hell from start to finish. The fourth quarter was particularly thrilling. The Texans managed to score on the Seahawks defense not once, but twice, with Watson touchdowns to Lamar Miller and DeAndre Hopkins.

Anything else? Most Texans players protested during the national anthem. It came as a response to Texans owner Bob McNair, who made controversial comments about player protests on Friday.

The Seahawks challenged a third down Russell Wilson pass that was ruled incomplete because they wanted it to be a fumble instead. It was recovered by Luke Willson and gave the Seahawks a first down.

Garcon had just two catches for 17 yards before leaving Sunday’s game in the third quarter with a neck injury. He has a team-best 40 receptions for 500 yards and led the NFL in receptions in 2013, when he caught 113 passes for 1,346 yards while with the Redskins. His neck injury is not expected to keep him out of next Sunday’s game against the Cardinals, who are 3-4 and without starting quarterback Carson Palmer. The 49ers then play host to the offensively inept Giants, who are just 1-6, before entering their bye week.

With a rookie quarterback in C.J. Beathard and injuries piling up on both sides of the ball, first-year 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says his team has “to be strong-minded.”

“I think guys did take a step forward from last week with a few things, especially on defense. We really have to take care of our bodies and get the team healthy, not just on Sundays but throughout the week. We have to find a way to get some of these guys back. It’s going to be that way all year. We have to find a way to get better. There’s no secret message I can say about it. The guys who get better will help us, and if you don’t, we’re going to get worse.”blues-017

Former major leaguer Gabe Kapler named new Phillies manager

The majority of Texans players kneeled during the national anthem prior to Sunday’s game in Seattle.

“I never meant to offend anyone and I was not referring to our players,” McNair’s statement said. “I used a figure of speech that was never intended to be taken literally. I would never characterize our players or our league that way and I apologize to anyone who was offended by it.”

Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins and rookie running back D’Onta Foreman sat out Friday’s practice in response to McNair’s comment.

McCarron, taken in the fifth round of the 2014 draft, is in the final season of his rookie contract. However, the Bengals could retain his rights next season because he did not spend enough time on the active roster as a rookie to accrue a year toward free agency. An arbitrator will have to decide whether he is a restricted or unrestricted free agent in 2018.

The “value” column reflects the likely upside that player would have in standard leagues if he becomes a starter: QB1 (top 10), QB2 (11-20), bench (worth a speculative add), waivers (not worth adding as a free agent).

The Hurricanes went ahead exactly five minutes later when Faulk beat Darling with a bullet from the high slot.

Kase gave the Ducks an early lead when he lifted the puck over Darling’s right shoulder from the right circle with 9:12 remaining in the first.

Grant made it 2-0 with 2:46 left as he beat Darling five-hole from the slot.

It’s hard not to point the finger at Cincinnati’s offensive line. After losing Whitworth and Kevin Zeitler in free agency

For this team — which has receivers like Jarvis Landry, DeVante Parker and Kenny Stills, plus Jay Ajayi at running back — to rank 32nd overall on offense (with 261 yards per game) is a travesty. To me, the blame can be placed on the quarterback play the team has received thus far. Jay Cutler posted a passer rating of 78.8 through six games, with seven touchdowns, five picks and 5.53 yards per attempt. This kind of ineffectiveness would be understandable if the team had no weapons, but that’s not the case in Miami.

It’s to the credit of Adam Gase — one of the best young coaches in the NFL — that the Dolphins are 4-2 despite carrying a point differential of -20. I would expect things to turn around with backup Matt Moore under center this week, after Cutler cracked his ribs in Week 6. If nothing else, this season should further clarify how much injured quarterback Ryan Tannehill brings to the table.

After ranking 13th on offense in 2016, Cincinnati has plummeted to 29th. Andy Dalton, who is posting a career-high interception rate (4.2 percent) and a passer rating of 83.7, is on pace to be sacked 50 times, while the ground attack has been limited to 81.8 yards per game and 3.3 per carry, despite the presence of Joe Mixon, Giovani Bernard and Jeremy Hill. Dalton is not the kind of quarterback who can successfully overcome protection issues and an ineffective run game.

It’s hard not to point the finger at Cincinnati’s offensive line. After losing Whitworth and Kevin Zeitler in free agency, there was an opportunity for former first-round pick Cedric Ogbuehi and former second-rounder Jake Fisher to step up, but the third-year pros have failed to make their mark. When they drafted Ogbuehi and Fisher, the Bengals surely did not envisitigers_070-115x115on having to rotate a well-worn veteran like Andre Smith in with them. Given the collection of skills players in Cincinnati, this offense should be much better — and I think the O-line is holding the Bengals back.
